AGM H5 Pro Two months ago, we got our hands on the AGM G1S, an impressive rugged phone with an infrared camera. And today we are gonna talk about another model from the brand, the AGM H5 Pro. It’s also a brand-new rugged phone with more affordable pricing, coming with the loudest speakers and an incredible night vision camera. Although this is an entry-level product, AGM still provides a complete set of accessories, including a USB cable, an 18W charger, the quick start guide, and a Card PIN. Just like other rugged phones, the H5 Pro looks very robust at first glance but not so sharp. When holding it in hands, you can feel the curve of the phone body fit well in your palm, and the four corners of the H5 Pro are reinforced with rubber material to cope with those most violent crashes. The back cover of the phone has a Kevlar-like texture that protects the phone from scratching while also increasing the friction for holding, which did feel safe in hands. On the top of the back cover, you can see a large speaker module that produces up to 109db of sound, which is pretty amazing when we got the sound test result. But I still want to say that the phone is not for those RPG games that require high performance or high graphics. But the good point is that you don’t really need to worry about the heating issue or power draining that we generally got on a regular flagship phone. Battery & Charge Compared to AGM’s flagship products, the H5 Pro has a larger battery. The 7000mAh battery supports 10 hours of continuous gaming and up to 423 hours of standby. I believe that no one would continuously play games for 10 hours on such a rugged phone. A benefit brought by the large battery is that it allows you to focus your mind on things that are really worth paying attention to, but not keep finding a charger for it. However, one thing you should note is that the charger’s maximum output is only 18 watts, so you’d better fully charge it before you set off. And it’s interesting that AGM brought a special feature of wireless charging for the rugged phone. But it’s not the common way with charging coils that we saw before. So, let’s check out this phone and how it stacks up for everyday and professional use. In the Box The AGM Glory G1S comes in a recycled box with an 18W adapter and a USB-A to USB-C cable. You also get some AGM stickers, an online warranty card, a sim ejector tool, replacement rubber flaps for the sim slot and the USB-C port, and a Quick Start Guide in English, German, Russian, and Spanish. The phone uses an entry-level Snapdragon 480 5G SoC, paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, so don’t expect it to run processor heavy-apps or play high-end Android games. If you ordered the optional charging dock, you would get it in a separate box. Nevertheless, it has a 6.53-inch TFT display with a 2340 x 1080 resolution. Although it doesn’t provide the bright and vibrant colors we’re used to on AMOLED or IPS screens, it provides a decent enough experience. You also get a 48MP AF Sony main camera, a 2MP macro camera, and a 16MP selfie camera. It also has a single LED that serves as the flash and torch. However, unlike most other smartphones, it doesn’t come with a case in the box. If you’re going to compare these specifications to other phones in the same price range, you’ll say that it’s a pretty weak device. But you don’t buy this device for its processing prowess. Instead, you purchase this for its heavy-duty and specialized functions. That’s because this phone is built tough. It has an IP69K environmental protection rating—the highest possible anyone can get. The phone can last two days without charging in regular use, including taking photos, thermal images, and the usual social media browsing. Camera Performance The AGM Glory G1S’s main camera generally has poor performance. Its output images are soft, with low vibrancy. Furthermore, the weak SoC means that the phone takes time when taking images. There are several instances where the device takes about a second to take the photo after pressing the shutter button. It also struggles in low-light conditions, taking over three seconds to process an image. Furthermore, it doesn’t automatically detect the scene, so you’ll have to set it according to what you see manually. Even the built-in Macro camera doesn’t do well, delivering poor quality soft images. The selfie camera also produces washed-out images, so don’t expect much. You can’t use the AGM Glory G1S for high-quality photos—at best, they’re there for documentation and recording; at worst, they’re there because people expect them. However, the infrared camera lets you do what no other ordinary smartphone camera can do: see in the dark. The built-in infrared bulb allows it to see, even if there’s no infrared signature around. This is perfect if you need to capture dark areas, like basements, inside air ducts, or even the interior of pipes. Thermal Camera The thermal camera is probably why you’re buying the AGM Glory G1S. The thermal sensor sits square in the middle of the phone’s camera module and offers a 256 x 192 resolution. It can capture temperatures in two modes: from -20 degrees to 150 degrees Celsius for L1 and 100 to 500 degrees Celsius for L2. You need to use the IR Camera app to access the thermal imaging sensor. The Classic Mode lets you choose whether you want the camera to have a self-timer and if it should show its detected measurements on the screen. When you switch to Pro Mode, you also get ROI, which allows you to measure a specific area on the screen, and Modes, which lets you save images from the thermal and primary camera together. You can also change its parameters, adjusting your Target’s Emissivity, the Ambient Temperature, and its Distance from you. There are several color modes to choose from—from Iron, which most people use, to White Hot or Black Hot. There’s also the Greenhot mode, which makes it look similar to what some military outfits use for their night vision goggles. You can also change the units from Celsius to Fahrenheit and vice versa, depending on what you’re used to. The thermal camera is accurate for industrial use, allowing you to detect heat sources and measure their temperature. The thermal images you took are saved in the phone’s image folder, which is different from its Camera folder. You can also generate a report and share the results and the image to your desired app from the IR Camera app directly. Other Features Aside from the thermal and infrared cameras, the AGM Glory G1S also sports several work-specific features. These make the phone useful for those in the field, making their life easier. Programmable Button Aside from the power and volume buttons on the phone’s right side, it also has a customizable button on the left side. This orange metallic button allows you to set it to your most needed tool. You can set it in Settings > User define key, and you have the following options: Push-to-talk Audio Play Camera LED Torch Google Assistant Laser Pointer None If you choose the Push-to-talk feature, it launches the preinstalled Zello app. This digital walkie-talkie app uses your phone’s cellular connectivity to allow you to talk to anyone using the app and is in the same channel with the press of a button. The Camera option turns on the camera, not the thermal imager. Unfortunately, there’s no option to launch the IR Camera with this button, so you’ll have to open it manually in the field. But, whatever feature you choose, all you need is to press and hold the button to activate it. Laser Pointer The phone also features a Class 2 laser pointer at its top. You can use this to point things to your colleagues... or play with your cat. But that’s it. It’s a shame that they could’ve added a receiver at the top and turned the pointer from a novelty feature into an accurate measuring device. Lanyard Attachment One simple but practical feature this phone has is the lanyard attachment hole on the lower-right corner. You can use this to attach a wrist strap or lanyard. Optional Charging Dock If you look at the rear of the phone, you’ll see that it has four contact points at the back. The optional charging dock connects to these contact points, allowing you to recharge your phone without opening the USB-C flap. The charging dock allows you to recharge the device, even if it’s wet. Unlike other water-resistant phones, where you have to wait for the USB-C port to dry out before plugging it in, all you need is to wipe it down and place it on the dock. So, as soon as you get home or back to your base, you can recharge your phone after wiping it dry. Everyday Use Although the AGM Glory G1S doesn’t have the features most tech-savvy smartphone users look for, it has everything a worker would need when out in the field. It’s tough and reliable, has easily pressable buttons, and does what is required of it. Its speakers are also reasonably loud, ensuring you can hear what you’re watching when taking a quick break. However, don’t expect Dolby-quality sound. The phone uses a clean version of the Android 11 operating system, with no bloatware. Aside from the standard Google apps, including Chrome, Gmail, Maps, YouTubes, and Drive, the only other app you get on it is Zello, a walkie-talkie app. The lanyard attachment point allows you to hang it around your neck, wrist, or a carabiner. The optional charging dock is also a must-buy, as it allows you to place the AGM Glory G1S on it after a long day and come back to it later with a full charge. One thing you should note, though, is that the phone does not have any Gorilla Glass or other branded glass protection for its screen. It comes with a pre-applied plastic screen protector, but it’s wise to add a third-party tempered glass screen protector for better coverage. Perfect for the Field Worker Despite its shortcomings, like a weak SoC, a dim screen, limited RAM and storage, and a poor camera system, it offers features important to its users. The AGM Glory G1S’s ruggedness and ergonomics for field use make this the perfect work phone, especially for blue-collar personnel. If you’re considering buying a work phone and typically working with a thermal camera, you should consider this device. It offers a more portable solution over dedicated devices and a tougher one compared to add-on thermal cameras for iPhones. While today’s modern smartphones are great, there are often features about them that people deem unnecessary. For example, the lack of physical buttons is often a drawback for those who have less dexterity in their hands. They’re also often very fragile. This may lead some modern smartphone users to look for another option, one that counteracts some of the above features. This review looks at a smartphone that fits the bill for those criteria: the AGM M7 4G LTE. First Impressions Opening the AGM M7, I’m immediately brought back to the early days of mobile phones. It’s fairly chunky and has a large physical keyboard. It reminds me of cell phones circa 2005. However, there’s more to this phone than meets the eye. While today’s modern smartphones are great, there are often features about them that people deem unnecessary. It’s actually running a simplified version of Android under the hood, and as a result, it has access to many useful applications that you may be using on a daily basis. Plus, it still has modern features, like a fairly high-quality 4 Watt speaker, Bluetooth, WiFi, and Type-C charging, meaning you can still use it the same way you would your typical modern smartphone. There is something that’s glaringly wrong with any setup guides for this device. What I found was that you have to open the battery compartment on the back of the device and remove a plastic tab that’s covering the battery contacts, which prevents the device from turning on. That’s listed nowhere in the manual, so make sure you do that. User Experience Using the AGM M7 is a bit of a mixed bag. I like that it has a physical keyboard and touchscreen, as that means I can still navigate the device like I would like to. Using Chrome is fairly painless, with the only sore spot being that if I search Google as most would, I’m typing out a full question using a T9 keyboard, which I’m desperately out of practice to do. I do really like the quality of the speaker. For a device that’s meant to be rugged, it’s certainly good enough. I can watch a video or have someone on speakerphone without it being distractingly bad. I haven’t tested the military specifications for this device, but it certainly seems rugged. The specs say you can drop it from 2 meters, submerge it in 1.5 meters of water, operate it from -20 C to 60 C, and have it repel 99 percent of dust. It also gets up to 15.2 hours of talk time and 13 days on standby from just one single charge. If you’re someone who works in construction or needs a phone that’s particularly rugged for whatever reason, I can absolutely recommend this device. Plus, if you wear large gloves, the icons on the touchscreen are large, and the T9 keyboard has chunky buttons, making it a great fit. AGM M7 Cons There’s one thing I really don’t like about the AGM M7. While it’s running a simplified version of Android, it’s nowhere near as customizable as Android. You can’t add or remove any applications, which means you’re stuck with Skype, WhatsApp, and TikTok on this phone forever. Overall Verdict If there’s one thing I’d have to commend the AGM M7 for, it’s being a rugged, traditionalist outlier in a fragile smartphone world. While I haven’t tested it, this phone certainly has the credentials to be a great phone for someone who works in a highly-demanding job like a construction worker or a mechanic and needs a tough phone. The removable battery, dual sim cards, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Type-C charging make the AGM M7 a surprising mix of a lot of the things that people really like about old and new smartphones. I also really like that it doesn’t proclaim to be anything it’s not – it’s clearly meant to be a simple, rugged phone that does its job and nothing else. Plus, for a price around $100 USD, you can’t beat it.

So it may come as less of a surprise that a number of minimalist or so-called dumbphones run Android too, even if in most cases you really won't be able to tell. Does your next Android phone have to be a smartphone? Turns out, the answer is no. And deciding to go for something simpler may be a smart decision for you to make. Here are a few reasons why. 1. Innovative Designs The smartphone landscape has arguably become rather dull. Each year we find ourselves faced with another crop of glass slates with slightly different screen sizes and a few color options. Sure, there are a few phones trying out something new, such as foldable screens, but thanks to the software the experience still feels largely the same. You can take steps to turn your existing Android smartphone into a dumbphone, but that won't do a thing about the design. Some phones flipped open like a clamshell. Some had full keyboards. You could get a phone that swung open like a razor blade or had adaptive e-ink buttons. That innovation is starting to return to the world of minimalist phones. The Light Phone 2 is a credit card-sized touchscreen phone with an e-ink, text-based display. The Punkt phone also eschews fancy graphics, and is a traditional voice phone with LCD screen and tactile buttons. You're no longer limited to Android-based dumbphones that look like variations of the Sonim XP3. 2. Excellent Support For a handful of companies, minimalist phones serve as their flagship product. This is the case for the aforementioned Light Phone 2 and Punkt. These phones have been around for several years now, but they’re better now than they were at launch. This is the opposite experience of most Android smartphones, where the device is at its best when it is brand new. The Light Phone 2, for example, began as a phone that could make calls, send texts, and set an alarm. Today it can also play music, download podcasts, and provide navigation. There’s a calculator, and you can send texts more easily using voice-to-text. As for the Punkt phone, the biggest addition has been Signal integration, making the Punkt MP02 one of the most private communication devices you can buy. 3. Longer Battery Life Whether you opt for a minimalist phone or a flip phone with several apps, it will still not draw nearly as much power as a smartphone. You won’t need as much computing power, nor will you have as large a screen. This translates to longer battery life. How much longer your battery lasts depends on which phone you choose. Since dumbphones don’t need as much power and aren’t as large, they tend to also come with smaller batteries. But some will still last for closer to a week, while others may power down after two or three days. Still, it’s unlikely you will need to scramble to find a charger. 4. Pocket-Friendly Sizes The smaller size comes with another major benefit. If you carry your phone around primarily in your pants pocket, you may have watched those pockets fill out more and more with each phone upgrade. Modern phones are nearly the size of tablets. Meanwhile, pockets haven’t gotten any larger. For many, dumbphones won’t just fit more easily into your pocket, they’re fit more comfortably in your hand. You will no longer have to slide the device around or contort your hand awkwardly to reach various corners of the screen. All this means the phone commands less physical space on your body. When you leave the house, you will literally have less weighing you down. 5. Less Tracking Most dumbphones don’t come with any form of private communications. Your carrier will have a record of every call you place and text that you send. Some will let you sign into a chat app like WhatsApp or Messenger, but with these apps owned by Meta and other tech giants, it’s hard to regard them as private. In this area, dumbphones are a step back from smartphones. Yet, at the end of the day, dumbphones still come with less tracking. On smartphones, most popular apps track your behavior in some form or another. They know what you read, where you go, what you buy, what you watch, and what you listen to. You are often giving numerous companies deep insight into many aspects of your life, throughout most of your waking hours. And when you’re asleep, well, some company has likely pieced together when you generally go to bed and when you wake up. With a dumbphone, you simply aren’t generating this much data. 6. Fewer Distractions All of those apps that aren’t tracking you? Well, they aren’t distracting you either. You don’t have an app prompting you to watch the latest viral video, listen to the next podcast, or read the article a stranger just linked to. It’s not just a lack of notifications either. When you`re standing in line at the store or sitting by yourself at a park, your phone is less likely to call for your attention. Instead, you will think of other ways to enjoy the moment. Whether that’s starting a conversation, observing what’s going on around you, bringing a book, drawing, or some other activity that, in the end, is bound to feel more rewarding. Most Android-based dumbphones hide any reference to Android entirely. The Sunbeam F1, for example, says it runs Basic OS. Others make a mention but remain highly customized, like the AGM M7. Some have apps, but you're very unlikely to find the Play Store. Installing apps isn't the point. Will Your Next Android Phone Be a Dumb One? There are tradeoffs to making this kind of switch. Adopting a dumbphone can mean doing without the ability to share photos or easily scan QR codes. These are just a few of the inconveniences you can expect.
